Clan Feuds in the Highlands

Highlighting Historical Fiction with Jeanine Englert and The Highlander’s Secret Son

Even though my newest book, The Highlander’s Secret Son, takes place in Georgian times in 1743, the clan rivalry between my hero, Brandon Campbell, and heroine, Fiona MacDonald, is sparked by a previous true historical event that occurred generations before them: The Glencoe Massacre of 1692.

After Alasdair Maclain MacDonald of Glencoe missed the January 1, 1692 deadline for taking the oath of  loyalty to King William by a mere five days, Captain Robert Campbell and his regiment were sent to Glencoe on February 1st to collect taxes and await further orders.

During the next two weeks Campbell and his men stayed with the MacDonalds and enjoyed their hospitality. On February 12th, Campbell and his men received orders to attack their MacDonald hosts and massacre them, taking great care to ensure that the clan leader Alasdair and his sons were killed to make an example of them and frighten other clans into submission to the king.

The attack ended in Alasdair’s death, but his sons and grandson as well as many other clan men and women escaped to safety despite a raging winter storm. In total, 38 members of the MacDonald clan were killed. The event was infamous as it was deemed “murder under trust” for happening while the Campbells were enjoying the hospitality provided by the MacDonalds

I highly recommend Scotland: The Story of a Nation by Magnus Magnusson for further reading on this topic. But don’t say I didn’t warn you, it’s easy to lose a few hours in those pages!
