Highlighting Historical Romance from the Highlands with Christina Phillips

Thank you, Caroline, for highlighting me on your blog today!

I’ve always loved history and as a Brit I was lucky enough to visit many Roman ruins and medieval castles as a child. It’s no surprise that I also love historical romance! But I also love weaving a thread of mysticism through my stories and what setting could be more suited to this than the beautiful, wild, highlands of Scotland?

When I first decided to write my Highland Warrior Chronicles, I did a lot of research on the history of Scotland. As I dug further back in time, into the ninth century, I was fascinated by the people who lived in that land before the arrival of the Scots.

The Picts were a fierce and independent people who, several hundred years earlier, had held off the might of the Roman Empire (and caused Hadrian to build his famous wall!) They left few written records, as they passed their history down through the ages in oral form, and much of the information we have of them are from Roman and Greek writings.  But they did leave us the fascinating carved designs and symbols on magnificent standing stones.

And then, by the tenth century, the Picts as a separate people disappeared from the annals of history. In their place rose the Scots from Dal Riada. What happened to the Picts?

I had found my hook. In the Highland Warrior Chronicles, with a backdrop of political intrigue and betrayal, I’ve weaved myth and legend into my stories, where the honorable Scots warriors find themselves the unwilling enemy of the noble Pictish princesses they fall in love with. When duty and honor collides, can love find a way?
