Did you know…
…that the Underground Railroad wasn’t the only route to freedom?
Enslaved people in Louisiana and Texas were aware that Mexico abolished slavery in 1829. Because what is now Texas had a growing number of immigrants from slave-holding states who took offense, it was one of the factors behind the Texas revolt of 1836 that resulted in the formation of the Texas Republic which proudly legalized slavery. It is estimated that as many as 10,000 enslaved people fled south to Mexico. Not only were they free if they could cross into Mexico, Mexico would not send them back, and, in fact, actively defied slave catchers.
