Castle Auchenben, December 1819
Perseus, a loyal and regal Maltese, is more than a ball of fluff. He’s determined to guard his lady and the household from the crowd of strangers and the onslaughts of intruders. When a villain surfaces, he proves once and for all that he has the makings of a hero.
Felton Hastings, Duke of Stanbourn, does too. He came into his title at fifteen. His well-meaning, but elderly, guardians taught him many important things about managing his duchy. They left him woefully ignorant in the ways of society, however. He endured a miserable London season, when he came of age. Now he has come to Scotland at the urging of a childhood friend. He leaves his title behind. It should be easier to practice social skills at a family party. It turns out to be rowdy and joyous, but the smiles of his host’s sister makes it all easier.
Lady Margaret Gibbs, who prefers to go by Meg, is enthralled by the shy new arrival. He has certainly improved since she saw him last. Of course he was only fifteen at the time. Like her cousin Flora, she thinks there’s a mystery about this Mr. Hastings. His affection for Perseus and fascination with the starry sky drive all other considerations away. He is perfect for her.
When trouble arises it is the duke and Perseus who step up to deal with it. Fell’s true title—and his honor and protective instincts—can’t stay hidden when Meg is hurting. As to Perseus, he always knew he was a hero at heart.
