I just finished the final chapters of The Defiant Daughter, <\/em><\/strong>but I’m not sure how much of the end I want to give away, so here’s a bit from early in The Wayward Son.<\/em><\/a> Sir Robert has come home in response to what his sister called a crisis, but he hasn’t been able to find one. He has finally forced her to sit down and talk.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u00a0\u201cI thought\u2014 That is, things just keep getting worse, failures leading to more. Ellis says it started with the will. He says less business from the Hall started a spiral and\u2014\u201d Emma said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWhat will?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cThe old earl\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rob needed a minute to digest it. \u201cThe earl is dead?\u201d That means David is the Earl of Clarion. \u201c<\/em>How long has it been?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cYou\u2019d know if you read your mail!\u201d Emma glared at him now, clearly irritated.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I never read mail from Ashmead.<\/em> For a long time, he had ignored even Emma\u2019s, until one Christmas in Lisbon when he grew maudlin over his fellow officers\u2019 cheerful letters from home.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cYou\u2019d know about the will too,\u201d she went on. \u201cHe stripped the estate, and with less and less trade from the Hall and fewer visitors, bad times fell on the valley. I thought if you returned, we might turn it\u2014\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWhat does this God forsaken will have to do with me?\u201d Her rambling irritated him. \u201cGet to the point Emma.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

She stared at him as if he were a madman. \u201cYou really don\u2019t know, do you? I mean, you ignored Da\u2019s mail and even mine until that note you sent three years ago, but I didn\u2019t think you\u2019d ignore the earl or Mr. Spangler.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWho the devil is Spangler?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cThe earl\u2019s solicitor. Didn\u2019t he notify you?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The day Rob discovered he owed his commission as a lieutenant to the Earl of Clarion, he refused to accept any further interference from the man or his estate. He earned every promotion he got after that, to the disgust of officers who considered themselves his betters. Letters came. He burned them unopened. He studied his sister with narrowed eyes. \u201cNotify me about what?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cThe will,\u201d she repeated, emphasizing the word with exasperation. \u201cWhat do you think we\u2019re talking about?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going in circles. What exactly does this will have to do with me? Are you trying to tell me he left me something?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

He almost missed her next words.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cWillowbrook. He left you Willowbrook,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Willowbrook?<\/em> A vision of the woman, standing proud, arms akimbo with her turnips and her musket, washed through him. \u201cNo,\u201d he roared, \u201cHell no.\u201d He reared up, almost toppling his chair, and leaned on the table with both fists. \u201cHe can\u2019t make me into some damned landowner to suit his fancy.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\n
